Flyswatter, A Total Physical Response Media to Improve The Students’ Vocabulary Mastery in SD 1 Jepang, Kudus Regency
Abstract
English had been a mandatory subject in primary school in Indonesia applied in KTSP curriculum. When the 2013 curriculum was issued, English has been categorized as extracurricular program. In this Emancipated Curriculum, English is regarded back as the mandatory subject. Related to the phenomena above, this study aims to improve vocabulary mastery using the TPR method with Flyswatter media and to know the students’ perception towards the implementation of TPR method. This is a Classroom Action Research. There were 24 students in the 5th grade of SD Negeri 1 Jepang in Academic Year 2022/2023 studied. The research instruments used were teacher observation sheets, questionnaires as well as structured tests. The results showed that there was an increase of score in cycle I and cycle II by applying flyswatter as the TPR method. The average score of student activity has increased from 46.67 in pre-test, 71.25 in cycle 1 and 87.92 in cycle 2. Thus, the TPR method with Flyswattter media can improve students’ mastery of vocabulary and has successfully created an environment that makes learning enjoyable and exciting, which had an advantageous impact on students' enthusiasm for learning English.
Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi mata pelajaran wajib di Sekolah Dasar di Indonesia pada Kurikulum KTSP. Ketika Kurikulum 2013 disahkan, Bahasa Inggris dikategorikan sebagai program ekstrakurikuler. Di era Kurikulum Merdeka saat ini, Bahasa Inggris dimasukkan kembali sebagai mata pelajaran wajib di SD. Berdasarkan fenomena tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan kosakata siswa dengan menggunakan media Flyswatter dan mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap implementasi metode TPR. Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Terdapat 24 siswa kelas 5 SD Negeri 1 Jepang Tahun Ajaran 2022/ 2023 sebagai subjek penelitian. Peneliti menggunakan instrumen observasi, kuesioner dan tes terstruktur. Hasilnya menunjukkan adanya peningkatan nilai rata-rata siswa pada siklus I dan siklus II. Peningkatan nilai rata-rata dapat dilihat dari nilai pretest 46.67, siklus I 71.25 dan siklus II 87.92. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa metode TPR dengan media Flyswatter dapat meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa dan berhasil menciptakan lingkungan yang membuat pembelajaran menyenangkan dan mengasyikkan sehingga berdampak positif pada antusiasme siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.
